Are all politicans venal?

In a video (Democrats Waste No Time), CBS news analyst Bob Schieffer said that the White House will do what’s best for President Bush and Congress will do what’s best for Congress.

Didn’t we elect these people to do what’s best for the nation, for the people?

Bob Schieffer is hardly alone in attributing self-serving motives to all elected officials. Yet I don’t recall any elected official being asked to discuss such charges in an interview. Of course no politician would come out and say he or she is in it for the salary or for the perks, rather than as a sense of duty. But certainly there are some independently wealthy members of Congress who have no problem buying whatever they want. So why the assumption by all news analysts that US politicians are motivated more by winning than by doing what they think either is best for the country or for their constituents?
